01

Start with member value

The proposition should help members with spending they already make rather than encourage unnecessary purchases. Grocery, household, travel and other everyday categories can make the benefit relevant across a broad membership.

Position savings as an added member benefit, not as financial advice or a substitute for appropriate support where a member is struggling.

02

Choose the right delivery route

A white-label platform can launch under the organisation’s brand with relatively little internal development. An API is better suited to teams that want to place rewards directly within established digital banking journeys.

The decision should reflect product capacity, security review and desired launch timing—not simply which option sounds more technically sophisticated.

03

Control eligibility securely

Access can be connected to an existing member account through SSO or another verified route. Agree how joint accounts, changed email addresses, closed memberships and account recovery are handled.

Only the data needed for the agreed service should be exchanged, with controller and processor responsibilities documented clearly.

04

Make the commercial model transparent

Merchant-funded commission can support member savings and create income for the organisation. Explain internally how customer value is applied and how any remaining Net Commission is calculated and paid.

Use cautious forecasts. Member demographics, digital adoption and merchant mix will influence the result.

05

Plan governance and support

Risk, compliance, data protection, finance, member services and marketing may all need input. Give each team a clear decision point rather than circulating a nearly finished proposition for open-ended review.

The support model should tell members who to contact and ensure supplier issues can be escalated without passing the member around.

06

Measure whether members benefit

Track activation, repeat use and value delivered across the membership, not only total transaction value. Look for gaps by age, digital access or member segment where appropriate.

Commercial contribution matters, but a member-focused organisation should also be able to show that the programme provides useful and reasonably distributed value.

Official guidance

These independent sources provide useful regulatory and governance context:

Questions businesses ask

Can a building society offer a member rewards platform?

Yes. The proposition, communications, data use and governance should fit the organisation and its member obligations.

Can rewards be branded as our own service?

Yes. A white-label platform can use the organisation’s brand, domain and programme messaging.

Do members need another password?

Not necessarily. Single sign-on can connect an eligible member’s existing account to the rewards service.

Can the programme generate income?

Eligible transactions may generate commission, subject to merchant rates, customer value and the agreed commercial model.

Which rewards are most relevant?

That should be tested with the member base, but everyday spending categories often provide broad practical use.
